I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.
Philippians 4:11 (NKJV)
Writing from prison, Paul speaks of a state of being that transcends the circumstances he is in. The apostle had faced hunger, abundance, freedom, and imprisonment, yet through it all, he found a deep-rooted satisfaction defied his tribulations.
I Have Learned to be Content
In our culture, when happiness is usually associated with material belongings or conveniences, contentment is sometimes misinterpreted. But Paul tells us that genuine contentment is a decision, a faith-based way of thinking. Regardless of our current situation, it is a mentality that acknowledges God’s provision and sovereignty.
Think about the circumstances in your life that make you feel unsatisfied. Are there areas in your life where you wish you had more? Pray that God will help you understand these circumstances. One way to develop a heart of contentment is to change your attention from what you lack to what you have.
How to Cultivate Contentment
Practice being present instead of obsessing over regrets from the past or future aspirations. Recognize that life is a gift and give your all to the things and people you are now involved in. Remember that God will continue to provide for you as He has in the past. Have faith that He is looking out for your best interests and is aware of your needs.
Cultivate and nurture contentment like a precious plant. Let today’s key text lead you throughout your day so that you might find happiness and serenity in every situation, understanding that genuine contentment can only be found in God.
Prayer
Almighty God, please teach me to believe in Your timing and provision and to be content always.
