When the Storm Becomes a Whisper

Daily Devotional – Wednesday, October 30, 2024
He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed.
Psalms 107:29 (NIV)

Overwhelming circumstances, like literal storms, occur frequently in life. These tempests may be external, such as relationship problems, health problems, or financial difficulties. They may also be internal, showing up as fear, uncertainty, or anxiety. How encouraging, then, is it to know that God can turn our storms into whispers?

The Waves of the Sea Were Hushed

It can seem like we are alone while life’s storms rage all around us. Our key text gives us comfort in knowing that God is alive and well and prepared to step in. Take a moment to imagine God smothering a roaring storm and making it a mere whisper. See Him creating calm where currently there is chaos.

For us to experience God hushing our tempests, however, we need to consider both our own reaction and the external situation. Recognizing that God can calm both the storm outside and the turbulence within of us is a necessary part of growing in faith.

When the Storm Becomes a Whisper

Consider bringing your present troubles before God for a time. Pray for Him to calm the waves and give you inner peace. Even if the storm doesn’t end right away, keep your eyes on God because He might be at work in your circumstances.

Which storms are you facing in your life today? No challenge is too big for God to manage. Let that assurance comfort you, especially when the solutions you seek do not manifest immediately. Rest assured that when God intervenes, the fiercest storm becomes a mere whisper.

Prayer
Father in heaven, please remind me that You can hush the worst tempest in my life.
