Beware of False Promises of Peace

Daily Devotional – Thursday, November 7, 2024
They have also healed the hurt of My people slightly, saying, ‘Peace, peace!’ When there is no peace.
Jeremiah 6:14 (NKJV)

The Jews of Jeremiah’s day were living in rebellion, but their religious and civic leaders promised them that everything was alright and that peace would be guaranteed. Our key text highlights how hazardous it is for people to look for temporary solutions or consoling lies rather than dealing with the underlying causes of their brokenness.

They Lie There is Peace

The people of Judah were treated superficially for their spiritual wounds, which gave them false hope. However, the people and their leaders could not fool God. The truth of sin cannot be denied, avoided, or ignored in order to achieve true peace. Confession, peace-making, and submission to God are the paths to true peace.

Relationships, accomplishments, and drugs may provide us with short-term solace in our world, but they are all band-aid solutions for our underlying soul wounds. The presence of Christ, not the lack of conflict, is what constitutes true peace. He alone has the power to heal our pain and provide us with safe, long-lasting slumber. Hence we must seek His peace always.

Beware of False Promises of Peace

The prophet cautioned that since the people had not turned from their sin, the peace that false prophets had promised was not genuine. Today, consider facing reality and pursuing true healing via repentance if there are instances in your life where you have disregarded God’s conviction or fought His call to change.

Prayer
Dear Father, please pardon me for putting my faith in false promises of peace. Lead me to a sincere soul-search and genuine repentance, and heal the wounds in my life.
