The Lord Goes Before You

And the LORD, He is the One who goes before you. He will be with you; He will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed.
Deuteronomy 31:8 (NKJV)

A New Year is an opportunity to start afresh. It fills us with optimism and hope that life will be better than it was last year. This positivity, however, can be punctured by fear of what might not work out. That is when we must remember what Moses told Joshua, “And the LORD, He is the One who goes before you.”

He Will Be With You

Moses was one hundred and twenty years old, and the time had come for him to hand over the leadership of the nation to his faithful assistant—Joshua. A short while before, Moses had communicated a similar message to the Israelites. Now it was the turn of Joshua to receive the same encouragement in a special way.

Moses assured Joshua that the Lord would go before the new leader, hence the need for Joshua not to fear. As you focus on the year ahead, it is possible to visualize the fearful ‘Canaanite armies’ of harsh economic times, unemployment, illness, and so on. Indeed, some of your fears are true, just as Joshua would later encounter enemy forces in Canaan.

The Lord Goes Before You

Now, instead of focusing on what might go wrong, fix your mind on God’s promise. Hear Him say to you, “And I, the LORD, I am the One who goes before you this New Year. I will be with you; I will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed.” Well, it’s time to celebrate 2025 because the Lord knows what is ahead and will be with you no matter what.
