Why You Should Not Dwell On Worthless Things

Daily Devotional – Thursday, January 16, 2025
Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, and revive me in Your way.
Psalms 119:37 (NKJV)

The key text for today encapsulates a potent prayer, pleading with God to refocus our attention from pointless, transient, or vain things to what brings true life—God’s ways. Because there are so many distractions in our environment, we often let our gaze dwell on worthless things.

Revive Me in Your Ways

The psalmist recognizes a basic reality: we cannot focus on our own strength. God is the one who helps us refocus, reorient, and renew our perspective. These “worthless things” aren’t always intrinsically bad. However, when they replace God in our lives or obscure Him, they divert us from the life He has planned for us.

“Turn away my eyes,” the prayer, is an act of submission. It acknowledges that our eyes frequently stray to things that, in the vast scheme of things, are unimportant. The psalmist yearns for the life that is found in meditating on the Word of God and His path rather than being engulfed by fleeting joys or worries.

Do Not Dwell On Worthless Things

We learn about the depth of God’s promises when we ask Him to refocus our attention. The world can never fully deliver the calm, expectation, and everlasting purpose that only God offers. We are given a sense of life that surpasses circumstances when we align ourselves with God’s truth.

Consider instances where you may have focused your eyes on worthless things as you meditate on today’s key text. Are you being distracted from God by “worthless things”? Ask God to come to your help.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, and revive me in Your way.
