When You Walk in Terrifying Valleys

Daily Devotional – Tuesday, April 8, 2025
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me. Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
Psalms 23:4 (NKJV)

Life can have seasons that resemble terrifying valleys. Then, the route ahead appears uncertain or perhaps perilous, the sun doesn’t seem to reach it, and shadows loom enormous. Today’s guiding text addresses those situations directly, reframing their strength rather than discounting their presence.

The Shadow of Death

In David’s time, the shepherd used his staff to guide sheep and bring them closer. He also used the rod to protect his flock from danger. When combined, the two tools represent God’s loving protection and direction. He is our protector and our leader throughout our darkest, most apprehensive moments.

Valleys will inevitably form. We shall experience pain, loss, anxiety, and bewilderment at some time. However, the Good Shepherd’s presence—rather than the valley’s darkness—is what we need to focus on.

When You Walk in Dark Valleys

God accompanies us in life’s valleys rather than always guiding us around them. During those times, His presence seems more genuine than before. The darkness is not a sign that He is not present. Instead, it is frequently the setting in which we develop the most faith in Him.

Are you now traversing a terrifying valley in your life? How does your perspective on your current battle change when you remember that you are not alone because the Lord is right there with you? How has God given you consolation during difficult times in the past?

Prayer
My Good Shepherd, thank You for being with me always. May this thought comfort me and empower me when I am going through terrifying valleys of life.
