Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!
1 John 3:1 (NKJV)
John is in awe when he exclaims, “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us…” The apostle is not asking a question. Rather, he is pausing to invite us to behold God’s unfathomable love that transforms sinners into children of the heavenly Father.
What Manner of Love…
The word “bestowed” conjures up images of plenty—love spilled out without reservation or restraint. This affection isn’t stingy or conditional. It is the type of love that reaches down to our frail humanity, draws us in, and identifies us as family.
Being referred to as God’s child is not something we merit. It is not a title we earn through moral behavior or religious deeds. A proclamation from the Father Himself, it is a gift. We don’t aspire to be God’s children; we already are His offspring!
Behold God’s Unfathomable Love!
How frequently do we forget this, though? How quickly we get caught up in attempting to prove our value to God and other people in order to gain approval. Our key text encourages us to find rest in who we really are. Which identity is more important than being a child of the Most High God?
Take a moment today to behold God’s unfathomable love. Look at all the love God has bestowed on you. Allow it to get deeply ingrained in your mind and transform your perception of both yourself and other people. You are a cherished child of God, not merely a believer.

Heavenly Father, how wonderful it is to be called Your child! The very thought itself is empowering and inspiring.
