Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus…
Philippians 2:5 (NKJV)
At the core of Christian living lies a dramatic call to embody Christ’s perspective in our everyday lives. Our key text poses the difficult task of adopting Christ’s humble mindset. Paul urges us to accept adopting the mind of Christ, which emulates being genuinely humble.
The Attitude of Jesus
Paul explains how this concept works in verses 6–8. First, despite being entirely divine, Christ did not hold onto His divinity. Secondly, He emptied Himself and became a servant. He ultimately became even more humble by submitting to death on Calvary.
We are supposed to embrace this attitude of selflessness, humility, and love. It includes obeying God when convenience leads us to make concessions, serving in a society that values prestige, and being humble in a world that encourages arrogance.
What it Means to Have the Mind of Christ
Adopting Christ’s worldview entails taking the low path when society encourages us to be proud and arrogant. It entails viewing others with grace rather than condemnation. It entails putting others above ourselves—not just when it’s convenient, but also when doing so comes at a cost.
We are unable to accomplish this endeavor on our own. However, the great thing about the gospel is that, through His Spirit, Jesus not only exemplifies this mindset, He also gives us the ability to live it. His intellect gradually shapes our emotions, thoughts, and deeds as we abide in Him. That is what it means to have the mind of Christ.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, come and live in me that I may have Your mind. Teach me to love and serve selflessly and to walk in humility. Take away my pride and inspire me to put the needs of others before my own.
