Loving the Unlovable

Daily Devotional – Friday, April 18, 2025
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8 (NKJV)

Today’s key text has a profoundly humbling impact. It dispels any delusion that we need to purify ourselves or win God’s favor. Rather, it reveals a reality so fundamental that it changes the way we think about the love of God: He loves the unlovable.

While We Were Yet Sinners

According to this scripture, Christ did not die for us once we had changed our ways or repented. He loved us in our sinful condition. In our defiance, in our humiliation, in the brokenness of ourselves, He embraced us.

Human love is often conditional. It is bestowed upon us when we fulfill our obligations, do well, or reciprocate. We love people who, in our estimation, behave well. However, God’s love is undeserved, unyielding, and unconditional. Indeed, God loves us irrespective of whether we know it or even love Him back.

Loving the Unlovable

When we consider how far we have wandered from God, we feel undeserving of His love. However, when we remember that He is love and that He accepts us the way we are, our reaction should be to love Him back and obey Him in all aspects.

God specializes in loving the unlovable. He loves you, not because of your actions, but because of His nature. That is what God demonstrated through Christ’s death on the cross. How will this reminder of God’s unconditional love change the way you view and relate to God?

Prayer
Heavenly Father, I am grateful that you loved me when I was unlovable. Thank You, Jesus, for dying for me on the cross. Help me to reciprocate the love through obedience.
