Of Pits, Miry Clay and Grace

He also brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my steps.
Psalms 40:2 (NKJV)

There are times when life seems like a pit—cold, dark, and unavoidable. We have all experienced the terrible pain of being entombed, whether it is by failure, addiction, anxiety, discouragement, or simply a period of intense waiting. David was not a stranger to such situations. Thankfully, by God’s grace, the psalmist experienced victory.

Out of the Miry Clay

God’s treatment of David encapsulates the essence of grace. In order to pull us up, God reaches down into the chaos, the muck, and the mistakes rather than expecting us to pull ourselves out of our pits. While we do not deserve it, God is so loving that He does not abandon us where we are

Moreover, God puts us on firm ground instead of simply pulling us out. From unstable footing to an immovable foundation, we find ourselves grounded in Christ. The unwavering hope for our salvation is in the grace God extends to us, not in our actions.

Of Pits, Miry Clay and Grace

Perhaps you still feel like you are in the pit today. Don’t worry. God’s grace is sufficient for you. He understands what you are going through. He remains the God who establishes your feet on a firm rock and elevates and restores you. Trust the faithful God who pulls His children lovingly out of horrible pits.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You because of Your grace. I am amazed by Your unconditional love, which never abandons me in horrible pits and miry clay. May Your grace continue to sustain me and eventually lead me to an eternity with You.
