The Anchor of the Soul

Daily Devotional – Friday, May 16, 2025
This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil.
Hebrews 6:19 (NKJV)

Life can feel pretty unpredictable. One minute, things are calm, and the next you are hit with something you didn’t see coming, such as a job loss, a diagnosis, a broken relationship, and so on. In the midst of all that, we need something to hold onto, an anchor of the soul, when everything else feels like it is shifting.

Both Sure and Steadfast

Our key text paints hope as an anchor. This is not just any hope, but a hope that is strong, steady, and planted deep in the presence of God. It is not based on good vibes or blind optimism. This hope is grounded in who God is and what He has promised. Jesus Himself has secured it.

This hope enters “behind the veil,” a reference to the most holy place section of the temple where only the high priest could go, once a year, to meet with God. Because of Jesus, now we have access to God all the time. Our hope is anchored not in our circumstances but in God’s presence.

The Anchor of the Soul

What are you holding onto in your life right now that feels shaky or uncertain? Have you been trying to anchor your peace in something that doesn’t last, for example, control, comfort, or approval? How might it change your day if you paused to remember that Jesus has already secured your future?

Prayer
Jesus, thank You for being my anchor. When life feels out of control, help me remember that You are steady, faithful, and near. Remind me that my hope doesn’t rest on my circumstances, but on You.
