Filter What You Hear

Daily Devotional – Thursday, April 29, 2021

Do not take to heart all the things that people say.

Ecclesiastes 7:21 (ESV)

I was enjoying a meal and catching up with a friend in a restaurant. Opposite us were two ladies. They were sipping orange juice while giggling loudly.

I did not understand the language they were using, but my friend appeared to know it. Whenever he glanced at the two women, he appeared shocked and angry.

As we walked out of the eatery, I asked my friend what the girls had been talking about.

“You will not be happy if I tell you.” He said.

“Why?” I asked

“Because they were discussing your ethnic community negatively.”

“In that case, I don’t want to hear the details.”

Even knowing that I was indirectly a subject of the conversation and laughter was itself hurtful.

I thank God that I did not understand the language. Perhaps I would have harboured hatred and bitterness against people I did not know personally.

The Bible warns us, “Do not take to heart all the things that people say.” (Ecclesiastes 7:21). We often allow ourselves to meditate on the evil things people say, then react as if we are not born-again Christians.

If you pay attention to everything you hear, you might end up with many broken relationships. For example, “you may hear your servant cursing you” (Ecclesiastes 7:21).

Some words are spoken to hurt you. Others are not directed towards you, but they will still hurt because they concern you. Learn to turn a deaf ear. Ask God to help you to ignore speeches that do not edify you or those around you.

Father, teach me to differentiate between the words I should ignore and those I need to pay attention to.
