When God Commands, You Become A Blessing To Others

Daily Devotional – Friday, May 6, 2021

“…and you will be a blessing.”

Genesis 12:2 (NIV)

History and the Bible single out men and women who left massive positive impacts in the societies they lived in.

Think about Florence Nightingale who founded modern nursing. How would our lives be without this noble profession? How about Mother Theresa who is remembered for uplifting the lives of people living in abject poverty in Calcutta, India?

There are many other unsung heroes and heroines whose lives continue to bless humanity long after their death. Thousands of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) continue to offer essential services to the needy, thanks to donations by well-wishers.

Today, our focus is on the epitome of blessings in the Bible – Abraham. In Genesis 12:1, God instructs Abraham to leave his community and family and travel to an unknown land. With this command comes various blessings.

Consider Genesis 12:2, “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.” Note that God would not only bless Abraham, He would also make Abraham a blessing.

The phrase, “…you will be a blessing” literally means, “Be thou a blessing”. It is actually a command. With all the blessings Abraham will receive from God, God demands that Abraham becomes a blessing to those around him.

According to Benson’s Commentary, “Thy testimony for God, thy example, thy prayers, and power with God, thy wisdom and prudence, thy peaceable and benevolent disposition and conduct, shall make thee a blessing in all places where thou shalt sojourn.”

Are you a blessing in attitude, character, speech and generosity to those around you?

Father, make me a blessing in my home, workplace and society.

For one to be a blessing it’s a process and sometimes a tough one. Abraham passed through a certain process. If this happens to most of us our society would be a place to be.
May the good Lord help me to be a blessing to many.
Thanks for the reminder Mr Maina.
