Daily Devotional – Tuesday, May 18, 2021
Ants are creatures of little strength, yet they store up their food in the summer.
Proverbs 30:25 (NIV)
Have you heard of the University of Ants? It is a prestigious institution that all of us should attend.
Proverbs 6:6 introduces the university. “Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise.” If you are lazy (and all of us often engage in some form of idleness), take your seat and acquire some wisdom.
Why the ant? “Which, having no captain, overseer or ruler, provides her supplies in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest.” (Proverbs 6:7-8).
There are two lessons here.
One, ants are diligent, as opposed to lazy human being. God expects us to work for a living. Proverbs 6:9 urges lazy people to rise from slumber and go to work. God warns us against despising work and embracing laziness.
Two, ants are proactive and forward-looking. During summer, they gather food because there will be nothing to collect in winter. When the freezing season arrives, they eat what they gathered in the season of plenty.
By not oversleeping in summer, the ant escapes the poverty (Proverbs 6:10-11) and biting hunger of winter. Compare this to human beings who often choose to relax when they should be working, and then struggle (with immense pain) when they should be relaxing.
Are you working according to the ability God has given you? Are you gathering resources you will need when, for one reason or the other, you will not be able to work?

Father, help me to work diligently and plan and prepare for the future.
