And all the widows stood by him weeping, showing the tunics and garments which Dorcas had made while she was with them.
Acts 9:39 (NKJV)
The town of Joppa was mourning. A local icon was dead. The most notable mourners were widows. Dorcas was a “…woman was full of good works and charitable deeds which she did.” Acts 9:36.
Word spread that the Apostle Peter was in the nearby town of Lydda. The people were not yet ready to burry Dorcas. They sent for Peter. They would not waste any chance to have her alive again.
Once Peter reached the upper room, “…all the widows stood by him weeping, showing the tunics and garments which Dorcas had made while she was with them.” Acts 9:39.
Mourning and celebration were in the same room. You know the rest of the story. God used Peter to resurrect the beloved lady. Because of this miracle, “many believed on the Lord.” Acts 9:42.
Take time and think about Dorcas. Her life was dedicated to charity. She made clothes for the less fortunate. Widows and other people in her community loved her for that. Most likely, she was known by many people in the community, including non-believers.
Now, take a moment to think about yourself. What is your legacy in your community? When the time finally comes for you to depart, what will people remember you for? Will they wish you were still alive? Will they recount your good works and even carry souvenirs?
You still have time. Start creating your legacy today. Begin with little acts of charity which can leave a positive and godly impact in the lives of those around you.
Father, make me a modern-day Dorcas.
