They profess to know God, but in works they deny Him…

Titus 1:16 (NKJV)

Our church elder interrupted normal church business to make an announcement. There was a stranger amongst us. He needed our urgent assistance. The man wore a turban, which we associated with another Christian denomination.

Two of his children had died in a road accident a few days before. We knew about the bus that had plunged into a river and killed many people. The old man came from far. He needed money to take his loved ones home for burial.

We contributed wholeheartedly. We felt honoured that he had come to our church first, though he was not one of us.

However, before the man could pick the money, the church elder had another announcement to make. A reliable police source had informed him that the desperate stranger was a con.

The turbaned man had used the same narrative to fleece other unsuspecting congregations. The annoyed visitor, now cornered, rose from his seat and fled before we could take any action.

Paul warned Titus about such people when he wrote, “They profess to know God, but in works they deny Him…” (Titus 1:16). Interestingly, Paul was describing people within the congregation, not strangers.

We may not have completely wandered and rebelled from the faith, but can the same words be applied to us, sometimes? Is it possible that by our actions we may be denying Christ? Do our actions match our Christian profession all the time?

In which areas of your life do you need to align your Christian faith with your character?

Lord Jesus, forgive me for the times I have denied You though my actions. Empower me to live for You all the time.
