How to Deal with Rejection

Judges 11:3 (NKJV)

In a previous devotional (Where Do Heroes Come From?), we focused on the life of Jephthah. Today, we will learn how he overcame rejection on his way to greatness.

Jephthah’s mother was a prostitute. When Jephthah’s half-brothers grew up, “they drove Jephthah out” Their reason? “You will not get any of our father’s inheritance…for you are the son of a prostitute.” (Judges 11:2).

That must have hurt! Do you know anyone who chose his or her biological parents?

How did Jephthah react? “Then Jephthah fled from his brothers and dwelt in the land of Tob…” Judges 11:3. He did not react violently, complain, engage in self-pity or plead to be accepted.

There are people and situations in life that we must run away from for us to discover our destiny and prosper.

If Jephthah lived today, his options would include alcoholism, drug and substance abuse, an abusive relationship or suicide. Other would comprise overindulging in food, movies or social media.

Thank God, he chose the path of self-dignity. He fled from those who saw no value in him. To realize his destiny, he changed his environment. As we shall see in the next devotional, Jephthah made the correct decision.

Are you facing rejection of one kind or another? Do you feel unappreciated, unloved and unvalued?

You can complain and blame others, but that will not help.

What you need is a change of attitude, friends or even your physical environment. Flee the situation that limits you. Your God-ordained destiny is waiting on the other side.

Lord Jesus, help me flee from situations that limit my spiritual and personal development.
