Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.
Philippians 2:4 (NKJV)
A foul smell was coming out of the house at the corner. It was locked from the outside. Neighbours gathered. They forced the door open. They found the rotting remains of a woman lying on a bed.
Why had no one checked on the woman for that long? Did she have family? How about workmates, friends, and fellow believers?
Many others in our midst are not dead, but still lead solitary lives. They have no friends. Family and church members care less about them. When sick or depressed, they handle their problems alone.
The Bible says, “Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others” (Philippians 2:4). We need to listen to this message repeatedly.
In a world full of selfishness, Christians need a reminder to be empathetic to the needs of other people. At a time when mental health issues are of critical concern, we need to reach out to those who isolate themselves from society.
Normalize calling family members, relatives, and friends you have not talked to for a long time. Buy food for a person or family that is in need. Visit and pray with a sick person. Mourn with those who have lost their loved ones.
Put yourself in the situation of the disadvantaged person and apply the golden rule: “Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them.” (Matthew 7:12, NKJV). Practice asking people, genuinely, “How are you doing?”
Father, lead me to a person who needs my help today. Show me how I can help that person.
