This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
John 15:12 (NKJV)
I was hurt. My best friend had betrayed me. I wanted nothing to do with him. How could he join my enemies in humiliating me?
As I recited the Lord’s Prayer, I stumbled when I muttered, “and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who have sinned against us” (Matthew 6:12, ISV).
You can’t be serious, God. How can you require me to forgive this traitor before you forgive me?
Have I not always forgiven you, even when you sin repeatedly?
Please allow me not to forgive this one.
It is not optional, my child. Either you forgive him or I won’t forgive you.
He hasn’t even asked for forgiveness. He is not remorseful.
For your own peace of mind, forgive him, even without hearing his apology.
Is that all, Lord?
No. “This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” (John 15:12).
This is too much, Jesus. On top of forgiving my betrayer, you want me to love this fellow?
I am not requesting it from you. I am commanding you to love him.
How can I love somebody when I cannot generate that love itself?
Here’s what I will do. I will fill you with my Holy Spirit. You will then produce the fruit of the Spirit, which has an ingredient called love (Galatians 5:22–23).
From now on, you will love others because I loved and forgave you first (1 John 4:19).
I understand now, Lord. Please fill me with Your love so that I can love others unconditionally and forgive those who have hurt me. Amen.
