What You Can Learn From Tiny Busy Bees

Daily Devotional, Tuesday, July 6, 2021

Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.

Philippians 2:4 (NKJV)

Recently, my daughter and I had an interesting discussion as we watched bees hopping from flower to another in our garden.

“Daddy, I think bees depend on us and we depend on them,” she said.

“Why do you say so?” I asked.

“Look at them, busy collecting nectar to make honey.”

“Mhh…”

“We will eat the delicious honey one day.”

“True.”

“But how will they make honey if we do not cultivate the garden and also plant these beautiful flowers?”

“You have a point, my child. We give the bees raw materials to make honey, which to us is food.”

This conversation reminded me of how important bees are. Without these insects, there would be no pollination, no fruits, no seed and no food. In other words, bees exist for the good of humanity.

God expects us, to some extent, to be like bees. He commands, “Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others” (Philippians 2:4). Life should not be about pursuit of personal interests only.

As John Donne once said, “No man is an Island”. You need other people. Take time to celebrate with them. Spend time with them in their sickbed. Mourn with them. Feed them when they are hungry. Pray for them. Relieve others’ burdens to the extent that God has blessed you.

What practical action will you take today to bring joy and relief into the life of someone who needs a shoulder to lean on?

Father, teach me to live for others, even as I seek to lead a good life.

How good would the world be if we all looked out for each other, a number of incidents we hear would be fairy tale and in no time at,all our work on this planet would be concluded, my prayer today is that we have that spirit within us.

Amen. Though bees are busy but they are united with a common goal.
