Strive to be Emotionally Intelligent

Daily Devotional – Friday, July 17, 2021

Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.

Colossians 4:6 (NKJV)

In 1990, John Mayer and Peter Salovey introduced a new form of intelligence called Emotional Intelligence (EQ).

They defined it as, “a form of social intelligence that involves the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ feelings and emotions …and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and action.”

An emotionally intelligent person understands the concerns, emotions and needs of other people. He understands that his actions and words affect those around him.

In addition, when you have a high EQ, you develop and nurture healthy relationships. You carefully choose and use your words. You also motivate and influence others positively.

The Bible addresses the oral communication aspect of Emotional Intelligence when it instructs, “Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.” (Colossians 4:6)

An emotionally intelligent Christian thinks before talking. He ensures that every word coming from his word is for building others. He does not insult or use sarcasm to belittle or besmirch others.

When you have high EQ, you would rather not speak than utter hurtful words. You are keen to build and maintain relationships. You care about the feelings of believers and non-believers alike.

Even when correcting others, you are graceful and loving. You know the right response to give to anyone because you have Godly wisdom.

What changes or improvements do you need to make in your speech to improve your relationship with those around you?

Father, let my speech be graceful and seasoned with salt, that I may know how I ought to answer everyone.
