God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Psalms 46:1 (NKJV)
David was in trouble on many occasions. As a young boy, he fought wild beasts to protect the flock under his care.
After Samuel had anointed him king, David faced another formidable enemy – King Saul. Saul’s soldiers hunted him up and down. He became like the animals he used to fight as a shepherd.
After he became the king of Israel, he attracted more enemies, this time his own sons. Unlike his previous enemies, he directly created these ones through poor decision-making and irresponsible parenting.
However, whether he created problems for himself or others threatened him, David needed a refuge often. For example, in Psalms 121:1-2, he says, “I will lift up my eyes to the hills. From whence comes my help? My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth.”
David acknowledged the mighty hand of God that had delivered him from his enemies on multiple occasions. He made another profound statement on God’s saving ways in Psalm 46:1: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
Note the words, “a very present help”. David implies that God is always near those who are in trouble. Life will serve you its fair share of difficulties. Your enemies and fake friends will cause some. Through your wrong decisions, you will also find yourself in peril.
Whichever the case, when you submit yourself in humility to God, you can say with the Psalmist, “…we will not fear…” (v. 2). Today, turn all you troubles (real or anticipated) to the God who is ‘very present’ to rescue you.
Thank you, Father, because you are ever present to rescue me from trouble.
