Then the LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to tend and keep it.
Genesis 2:15 (NKJV)
The Bible condemns laziness. For example, Proverbs 12:24 says, “The hand of the diligent will rule, but the lazy man will be put to forced labor.”
Why does God detest laziness? Because He is a worker. He created the earth. He even declared His work, ‘very good’. (Genesis 1:31).
Jesus is a worker, too. He says in John 5:17, “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working.” First, He was a carpenter. Then He spent the rest of His life preaching, healing and serving human beings.
Can we, then, claim to love God when we enjoy laziness or grumbling while working?
After God created man, the Bible records, “Then the LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to tend and keep it.”(Genesis 2:15). This was before man sinned.
Work is not punishment to man for sinning. When we go about our duties complaining, we are not in tandem with God. Work is supposed to be enjoyed because it is a command and gift from God.
After man sinned, God told him, “Cursed is the ground for your sake…” (Genesis 3:17). Further, “In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread.” (Genesis 3:19). God did not curse work. However, man would use more effort to make a living.
Do you view work as drudgery or a delight? As you go about your work today, consider this verse, “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men…” (Colossians 3:23).
Almighty God, give me fulfilment and joy in my work.
