But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa…
Jonah 1:3 (NKJV)
In Jonah chapter 1, the stubborn prophet descends rapidly into misery when he attempts to flee from God.
Note the use of the word ‘down’ in verse 2. “But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it...”
Now when a mighty tempest arose, and the ship crew desperately tried to save lives and cargo, “Jonah had gone down into the lowest parts of the ship, had lain down, and was fast asleep.” (v. 5)
In verse 13, following Jonah’s plea, the men “picked up Jonah and threw him into the sea Jonah.” Jonah ended up in the belly of a fish. (v. 17-18)
Like Jonah, when you consistently disobey God, your life takes a nosedive. You fall deep, deeper and deepest into sin and misery. Your achievements, if any, are not tangible, long-lasting or worthwhile.
Moreover, when your relationship with God breaks, you cannot have peace with those around you.
Thank God for His mercies because He lovingly pursues us to take us back home. He even prepares an escape route for us, like the big fish he provided for Jonah.
Today, if you realize your life is taking a downward trajectory, stop digging. Cry out to God. Ask Him to forgive and restore you. You will gradually experience progress in spiritual and material spheres.
Father, when I wander from your presence, please turn me back home.
What lessons do you draw from the life of Jonah? Please enrich this devotional with your comments. Blessings.
I now understand why I sometimes seems to fall apart and farther apart
But luckily because God is love,I only need to pray for the fortunes to change
Amen and Amen.
We Must Obey God’s will in our lives,🙏..May His will be done to us🙏
Indeed we must, Chairman.
His goodness brings us to repentance.
Amen, Martin. God never ceases to love and pursue us.
Please continue reminding us Mr Maina.
People forget easily, that most a time we wander from God.
Amen, Pastor. Thank you for the encouragement. God bless you.
Wow! This is an amazing inspiration,.. God will still restore us n create away when we tend to be hopeless n hide from His face.
Thank you, Wesley. God bless you.
