Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.
Proverbs 16:18 (NKJV)
Heaven is a holy place. Angels happily minister to and worship God. They also leave the presence of God to serve other created beings. God is the centre of heaven.
How then could sin emerge in a holy angel in heaven? How did Lucifer, the anointed covering cherub become Satan, the vilest of created beings? Paul called it “the mystery of iniquity” (2 Thessalonians 2:7, KJV).
Ezekiel 28:17 gives a hint. “Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor…” Lucifer’s heart was filled with pride because of his exalted position and God-given gifts.
Here is Isaiah’s description of Satan’s pride: “For you have said in your heart: I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation. … I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the Most High.” (Isaiah 14:13-14).
Lucifer lost his lofty position in heaven because of his pride. In the words of Solomon, “Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 16:18 (NKJV).
Unlike other sins, pride can easily escape detection. When we are proud, we do not ask for help or for forgiveness. We cannot submit to the control of God and the correction of fellow believers.
That is why “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” (1 Peter 5:5).
Only by surrendering your life completely to Christ can you overcome pride, the mother of all sin.
Lord Jesus, today I give you unconditional total control over my life.
I would like to hear your opinion on pride, sin and Christian life. Please leave a comment.
One of the big challenge in the Christian life is staying humble. Showing pride for our achievements, this then brings glory to own-self and forgetting the source or root of our everything God.
May God remind us why we need to be humble and what pride brings afterwards.
Well-said, Frank. God bless you.
