Why Jesus Prayed the Whole Night

Daily Devotional – Thursday, September 16, 2021

And when it was day, He called His disciples to Himself; and from them He chose twelve whom He also named apostles.

 Luke 6:13 (NKJV)

At the beginning of His ministry, Jesus had many followers. However, He needed a small core team that He would train to carry on the Gospel work after His death.

These chosen ones would become the pillars of the church. They would preach, teach and heal. Nevertheless, religious and secular authorities would persecute the twelve, and even kill most of them.

For that reason, Jesus needed to select just the right kind of people from the many that followed Him daily. Such an important mission could not be entrusted to just anybody.

If you were Jesus, what would you do? The Gospel of Luke has the answer.

Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.” (Luke 6:12, NKJV). The Son of God prayer the whole night asking His Father to help Him get the right people for the job.

That is why that morning, “He called His disciples to Himself; and from them He chose twelve whom He also named apostles.” (Luke 6:13, NKJV).

We must follow Christ’s example if we are genuine Christians. How do you prepare for important tasks or projects? Do you seek for God’s guidance and approval before you start? Are you reluctant to proceed unless and until God approves your plans?

Like Moses, tell God, “If Your Presence does not go with me, do not bring me up from here.” (Exodus 33:15, NKJV).

Father, I commit all my plans to You. I know what You approve you will prosper.
