Why You Risk Becoming a ‘Christian’ Atheist

Daily Devotional – Wednesday, October 6, 2021

The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”

Psalms 14:1 (NIV)

Adherents of the major religions on the globe have sharp ideological differences. However, one issue unites them – the belief in the existence of God.

Both living and non-living things bear evidence of an immensely intelligent and powerful Creator. Nature and all its beauty speaks of the One who everything them into being. Man, his intelligence and innovations reveal the infinite wisdom of the Creator.

Therefore, it is not surprising that David wrote, “The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.””

Psalms 14:1 (NIV). According to the Psalmist, foolishness and atheism are synonymous.

However, a close look at this verse reveals that folly is not merely denying the existence of God. The second part of this verse has a clue. “They are corrupt, their deeds are vile;
there is no one who does good
.” (Psalms 14:1).

By exercising wickedness and impunity, fools demonstrate their unbelief in the existence of a moral and just God.

Paul sheds more light, “For although they knew God, they neither glorified Him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools.” (Romans 1:21-22).

When we oppress the weak, commit injustices, deny people what is rightfully theirs and continue living in sin, we are atheists and fools. This is because we think God does not see our actions and He will not act against our wickedness.

We risk becoming Christian ‘atheists’ and fools while attending church faithfully. If our Christian profession and deeds do not match, we are declaring, “There is no God.”

Heavenly Father, help me be a genuine Christian in word and deed.
