Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.
Revelation 3:20 (NKJV)
One of the underlying themes of the Bible is decision-making. For example, God told the Israelites,
I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live. (Deuteronomy 30:19).
Let us examine two Bible passages that compare decision-making to opening a door.
Sin Lies at the Door
The first passage is a conversation between Cain and God. Cain was angry because God had accepted Abel’s offering but had rejected Cain’s.
So the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it. (Genesis 4:6-7).
God warned Cain that sin was at the door of his mind. If Cain allowed jealousy and anger into his heart, sin would pounce on him. Cain had the power to close the door of his heart to sin. He chose sin and killed Abel shortly after.
If Anyone Hears and Opens the Door
The second passage is Jesus’ message to the church in Laodicea. The Lord says,
“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” (Revelation 3:20).
It is the same door – your mind. This time, though, it is Jesus knocking. He does not force His way. He will only enter if you willingly open the door. If you reject Him, Jesus will leave, but there will be negative consequences.
Only You Can Open the Door
The analogy of a door is empowering because it recognizes the important role human beings play in deciding their destinies. You must open the door and only you can do it. Sin (Satan) and Jesus both want to come into your heart, whom will you open the door to?
Our thoughts, words and actions reveal the side we have taken. Have you opened the door for life or for death to enter? It is not too late to open the door to Jesus Christ.
Lord Jesus, I am opening the door of my heart to you once again today. Come and live in and with me.
