God Is Not Man That He Should Lie

Daily Devotional – Thursday, November 4, 2021

God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?

Numbers 23:19 (NKJV)

It is easy to lie. Many of us believe lying is a lesser sin. We use it as the easiest route to safety and for avoidance of blame. Perhaps that is why it is difficult to believe the words of another human being.

Think of the student who does not study enough for a test, choosing instead to create tiny clandestine notes to copy from. Some students even collude to cheat in examinations, by sharing answers.

The same learners often copy contents of their term papers from the internet. There are cases of academic research works being recalled because of plagiarism.

In relationships, cheating is prevalent. Cases of breakups and divorce are largely due to dishonesty. Many people will not say it openly but cheating is permissible and sometimes encouraged in society.

Political Dishonesty

Another prominent example of dishonesty is by politicians. Every time an election is coming up, politicians promise heaven to the electorate. They use money to bribe voters. Once in office, though, politicians pretend they never promised anything.

The list is long. The bottom line? Human beings are generally not trustworthy by nature and because of the environment and culture we grow in.

There is, however, one person whom you can trust 100%. The Bible says, “God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?” (Numbers 23:19).

The promises of God will never fail because He is their Guarantor. Unlike human beings, God keeps His words. You can trust the thousands of promises in the Bible. He will never recant any of them. The only human being we can trust are those who God is transforming, and even them, with a pinch of salt.

Thank You, Almighty Father, because unlike human beings, You keep your promises.
