Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness.
Psalm 37:3 (Berean Study Bible)
When the children of Israel arrived in Canaan, they began a new lifestyle. During their wanderings in the desert, they had mainly been herders. Now they needed to practice crop farming.
They had already spied the land and realized it was fertile. It could produce abundantly if they cultivated it diligently and faithfully.
Through crop farming, they were to learn some great lessons on how God’s power works in human life. In His explanation of the Parable of the Sower, Jesus told His disciples, “The seed is the word of God.” (Luke 8:11).
As they went about their crop husbandry activities, the children of God learned of God’s tender care and His unfathomable transforming power. They knew their material and spiritual life depended on the favour and grace of their heavenly Father.
Cultivate Faithfulness
It is within this context that the words of the Psalmist derive their profound meaning. David writes, “Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness.” (Psalm 37:3, Berean Study Bible).
Notice that trust in God is manifested through good works. We cannot be Christians yet fail to lead practical lives that glorify God and bless those around us. Genuine character transformation is an expression of the indwelling word of God (the seed).
Secondly, God reminded His people that as they dwelt happily and peacefully in the land He had given them, they were not only to plant crops, they were to ‘cultivate faithfulness’. Alongside their wheat, grape vines and other crops, faithfulness was to thrive.
Faithfulness to God in all aspects of life is a crop each of us should cultivate. This entails total commitment to God in our daily affairs, unadulterated obedience to God’s commandments and faithfulness in tithing and offering.
Like any other cultivated crop, time will come for faithfulness to bear fruit. The faithfulness principles states, “He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much…” (Luke 16:10, NKJV).
In addition, here is a beautiful promise on faithfulness: “But if you keep on being faithful right to the end, you will be saved.” (Matthew 24:13, Contemporary English Version).
How much faithfulness are you cultivating?
Heavenly Father, teach me how to cultivate faithfulness in all aspects of my life.
Please suggest ways through which Christians can cultivate faithfulness.
I want to cultivate faithfulness in my life. Help me God.
Thank you for the comment, Erastus. God bless you.
