For I will pour water on him who is thirsty, and floods on the dry ground. I will pour My Spirit on your descendants, and My blessing on your offspring.
Isaiah 44:3 (NKJV)
I love the first rain after a long drought. The sights and sounds are amazing. As the raindrops hit the earth, the dust begins to rise only to be suppressed after a short while. The unique aroma that comes from the subdued dust is something to savour.
For some minutes after the rain starts, no water flows on the ground. The thirsty earth gulps the water faster than little streams and pools can form. It is like an extremely thirsty person who finds an oasis in the desert.
In the days the follow, the soil absorbs more water until it is soggy. The more it rains the more floodwaters gather. The satiated soil rejects any additional water.
Thirsty Hearts in Need of the Holy Spirit
Like thirsty ground longing for quenching waters, so is the situation of every human being in relation to God. God, speaking through Isaiah, promises:
“For I will pour water on him who is thirsty, and floods on the dry ground. I will pour My Spirit on your descendants, and My blessing on your offspring.” (Isaiah 44:3).
Like many of God’s promises, this one has a condition. Before God can pour out His Spirit on us, we must be thirsty. To borrow the words of Jesus, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.” (Matthew 5:6).
God wants to forgive, save and help us but He will not force us to accept Him. We must first acknowledge we need Him. Take, for example, Joel 2:23, “And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.” You see your need; you call on God, and He saves you.
Only Acknowledge Your Iniquity
In relation to forgiveness, God tells us, “Only acknowledge your iniquity, that you have transgressed against the LORD your God.” (Jeremiah 3:13). God is ready to forgive but we must admit we are guilty and reach out to God for forgiveness.
Yes, God took the first step in loving us and dying for us while we were yet sinners (Romans 5:8). However, unless we believe in Him and accept the salvation He freely offers us, we will be lost.
To sum up, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16).
Lord Jesus, I need You in my life more than ever. Come and save me.
