How Trials Refine Our Characters and Implant Faith in Others

Daily Devotional – Monday, December 13, 2021

… the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (NKJV)

In the beatitudes, Jesus said, “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:10).

Paul emphasized, “Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.” (2 Timothy 3:12). As long as we live by different principles from those of the world, we will experience pain.

To the church in Rome, Paul taught, “And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope.” (Romans 5:3-4).

Similarly, Peter taught that trials were necessary for Christians to grow and mature.

In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 1:6-8).

How Trials Benefit Those Not Currently Suffering

Paul, however, adds another dimension of trials – the impact of our personal trials on other believers. God allows us to suffer so that our experiences and restoration can encourage and comfort other Christians who will go through similar experiences.

To the church in Corinth, Paul wrote:

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).

The normal reaction when we experience trials is to turn to God for strength and comfort. Consequently, after God has carried us through the tough times, our personal testimonies will demonstrate to others the brevity and importance of trials and the saving power of God.

Call upon Me in the day of trouble

David summarized this principle as follows: “Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.” (Psalms 50:15). Then your praise for God will carry another Christian through his or her tough time.

Next time you go through trials, remember it is for your own sake, for the benefit of others and for the glory of God. By the grace of God, bear your trails with courage. Come out a victor and be the role model another suffering Christian needs.

Lord Jesus, thank You for allowing me to face trials. Remind me to share my testimony to encourage other Christian undergoing trials to remain faithful to You.
