A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.
Proverbs 22:1 (NKJV)
The US dollar is arguably the most popular currency in the world. It is accepted in majority of nations and is globe’s reserve currency. A number of countries use the dollar is their national currency.
However, the US Dollar is not the strongest currency. The Kuwait dinar, Bahrain dinar, Omani rial and Jordan dinar are more powerful especially because of the oil wealth in these Middle Eastern countries.
A Good Name is More Desirable than Great Riches
According to the Bible, however, there is a more valuable currency than the dollar and the rest. This is how Solomon introduces it: “A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.” (Proverbs 22:1).
Who does not want to be rich? In modern society, we may not have gold and silver in abundance but dollars will suffice. Being wealthy comes with some degree of respect and honour. The moneyed ones seat at the high table and dine with the great.
Worth Much More than Silver and Gold
However, there is something dollars, dinars, pounds, euros, silver and gold cannot buy – a good name. The Contemporary English Version of the Bible renders Psalm 22:1, “A good reputation and respect are worth much more than silver and gold.”
A good name is a product of living amicably with people, interacting with them and sharing genuinely in their joys and sorrows. It results from integrity, loyalty, faithfulness, empathy and diligence. We earn a good reputation and respect when we match our words with our actions.
The Name that is Above Every Name
Do you want to have a good name? Your only option is to accept “… the name that is above every name – the name of Jesus.” (Philippians 2:9-10). Only Jesus can give you the inner power to acquire the most valuable currency on earth.
Holy Spirit, come into me and live in me so that I develop the character that qualifies to be called ‘a good name’.
Amen !I need to start working for a good name today.
That’s the spirit, Doc. Thank you.
