Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.
Matthew 7:21 (NKJV)
I live in a country where 85% of the population is Christian. Even those who do not attend church regularly identify with this faith. I think being a Christian gives one credibility and acceptability in society.
I guess that is why politicians harness faith to gain popularity. During election campaigns, their most popular greeting is, ‘Praise the Lord!’ They also attend church services without fail, and may attend services in several churches in a day.
Is the Popularity of Christianity Positive or Negative?
A few days ago, I listened as two friends argued on whom to elect between two leading presidential candidates. There was only one criterion under consideration – the religious affiliation and practices of the two individuals.
The popularity of Christianity is a reason for joy. Jesus commanded His disciples to make more disciples by spreading the gospel to all corners of the world. This work must continue until Jesus returns.
Why Am I A Christian?
However, I wonder, sometimes, whether the numerical growth of the church is commensurate with spiritual advancement. Am I a Christian because I believe Jesus and live according to His will or because it is popular or the norm to be a Christian?
When I consider the experience of Christians First Century Christians, I feel I should not base my faith on the numbers in the church. Back then, it was a crime to be a Christian. The few believers were persecuted, imprisoned and even martyred. It was not just about numbers.
Balancing Between Relationships and Popularity
Every time I am tempted to take spiritual comfort in the high numbers of Christians in my country, Jesus reminds me, “Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.” (Matthew 7:21).
Faith is fundamentally a personal issue before it becomes a shared practice. Professing Christ only makes sense when we obey God and lead lives that bring Glory and honor to Him. This faith is not just about numbers but also about building an active personal relationship with Jesus.
Lord Jesus, may I never forget to (by Your grace) build and maintain an active personal relationship with You.
