When God’s Timing and Purposes Contradict Ours

Daily Devotional – Wednesday, March 23, 2022

I, the LORD, will hasten it in its time.

 Isaiah 60:22 (NKJV)

I recently came across a social media post where an individual was lamenting that God had not been answering his prayers. He concluded it was misleading to say God was with us, especially in times of trouble.

I can empathize with this man because I have had such moments countless times. Today, however, I know it is unrealistic to expect God to answer my prayers exactly as I wish.

God Controls Time, Not Vice-versa

This attitude makes us reduce God into our messenger, to run errands for us. We think His work is to dispense blessings in the amounts and timelines we want. When God fails disappoints us we start throwing tantrums.

God is not bound by human timelines. In fact, God Himself created time when He brought the earth into being. He delineated day, night, weeks and seasons. Time does not control God; He controls it.

I, the LORD, Will Hasten it in its Time

In His dealings with us, God has His perfect time, which is often not in tandem with ours. He says, “I, the LORD, will hasten it in its time.” (Isaiah 60:22). In His omniscience and wisdom, God knows the exact time, place and manner to answer our prayers.

We must have faith that “…all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28). God’s supposed delays are tools for restoring His character in us.

God’s Perfect Purposes and Timing are for our Benefit

God does not arrive early. He does not show up late. The Lord comes at the right time – His time. Our work is to trust God always and especially during trying times.

Knowing He means well for us, that His timing is perfect and that He allows trials in our lives for our benefit, should fill us with hope, courage, joy and faith.

Almighty Father, when trials weigh upon me and I feel like You have abandoned me, remind me of Your perfect purpose for me and Your perfect timing for my life.
