Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good…
3 John 1:11 (NKJV)
In his third Letter, John describes the character traits of three professed Christians: Gaius, Diotrephes and Demetrius. The apostle warns us, “Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good.” (3 John 1:11).
Concerning Gaius, John says, “…brethren came and testified of the truth that is in you, just as you walk in the truth.” (Verse 3). John commends Gaius for being generous and for doing “faithfully whatever you do for the brethren and strangers.” (Verse 5).
Diotrephes does not receive the Brethren
In contrast, Diotrephes “…loves to have the preeminence among them, does not receive us. … prating against us with malicious words. And not content with that, he himself does not receive the brethren, and forbids those who wish to, putting them out of the church.” (Verses 9-10).
Diotrephes is a divisive and dictatorial person. He opposes and castigates servants of God. He not only is not welcoming, he also excommunicates Christians who exercise generosity.
Demetrius Has a Good Testimony from All
Thankfully, the last example is positive. The apostle writes, “Demetrius has a good testimony from all, and from the truth itself. And we also bear witness, and you know that our testimony is true.” (Verse 12).
Nobody disputes that Demetrius is a genuine, converted Christian. Even truth itself testifies to the character of this man.
Are You Gaius, Diotrephes or Demetrius?
If John were to write a letter to describe members of your church, would he portray you as Gaius the faithful and generous man? Are you likely to be the abusive and arrogant Diotrephes? Can believers and Non-believers call you a genuine Christian, like Demetrius?
