For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?
Mark 8:36 (NKJV)
The most dominant figure in world politics and military affairs from 1933 to 1945 was Adolf Hitler. He triggered the Second World War, which resulted in millions of deaths and destruction of property.
Ironically, Hitler took his own life as the Soviet Army zeroed in on him. There was no state burial for him, only the charred remains of the dictator.
Similarly, Marilyn Munroe amassed unprecedented fame in Hollywood. Her glamorous life was the envy of many. It, therefore, came as a surprise to many when Marilyn killed herself, aged 36 years.
For What Will it Profit a Man If He Gains the Whole World
In the public eye, Hitler and Marilyn had everything they needed. Before God, they were poor lost souls that needed the love and forgiveness of the Saviour.
To those who prioritize power, success, fame and pleasure before God, Jesus asks, “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? (Mark 8:36).
Making Tough Choices
A life without Christ is built on the mantra, ‘You Only Live Once’ (YOLO). You enjoy life unfettered. However, you have no hope beyond the grave. What awaits is eternal damnation.
In contrast, a Christ filled life is full of fun but it demands certain sacrifices. You eschew that which does not glorify God, including some pleasures. Your life is built around the old slogan, ‘What Would Jesus Do?” (WWJD).
What would you rather have? The entire fleeting world with all its pleasures or eternal life with all its joys? Choose wisely.
Prayer
Father, I would rather have Jesus than anything the world affords.
