You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book?
Psalms 56:8 (ESV)
For the last three months, I have battled a medical condition that is, intermittently, extremely painful. As I struggle with my pain, I ask God for explanations. My pain tends to climax at night, making me toss in my bed.
In such circumstances, the lyrics of a favourite song interrupt my thoughts, “Does Jesus Care?” Does it concern God that I am suffering? Are my tears worth the Lord’s attention?
You Have Kept Count of My Tossings
In moments like those, I remember David’s experience when the Philistines seized him in Gath. To avoid being killed, David pretended to be mad before King Achish.
In his agony and distress, David remembered that God had not forgotten him. He told God, “You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book?” (Psalms 56:8).
How comforting to know that God records all my tossings! None of my trials and tribulations are unknown to Him. Indeed, the Lord puts my tears in His bottle. He feels my pain and distress.
Does Jesus Care?
It is this kind of faith and trust in God that inspired Frank Graeff, a Methodist minister to compose the song, “Does Jesus Care?” If you are going through trying moments and uncertainties, meditate on the refrain of this powerful hymn:
O yes, He cares, I know He cares,
His heart is touched with my grief;
When the days are weary,
The long night dreary,
I know my Savior cares.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You because You record all my tears. Give me faith to wait for You to act on my situation.
Thank God because He identifies with our pain,He cares.
Amen, Doc. Indeed God cares.
