…nor complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer.
1 Corinthians 10:10 (NKJV)
The children of Israel witnessed the ten plagues in Egypt. God also parted the Red Sea for them to escape the Egyptian army into the wilderness. In addition, the Lord provided a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night for their protection.
Unfortunately, instead of being grateful to God and trusting Him more, the Israelites became experts in grumbling. For instance, after the twelve spies brought their report of Canaan, the multitude complained and rebelled against God and their leaders.
How long will these people reject Me?
Notice what the Lord says: “How long will these people reject Me? And how long will they not believe Me, with all the signs which I have performed among them?” (Numbers 14:11).
Paul reminds us that the experiences of the Israelites should serve as warnings to us. For example, unlike them, we are not to “complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer.” (1 Corinthians 10:10).
Grumbling implies ignoring the blessings of God now and in the past and focusing on momentary problems. We forget the way God has led us in the past and His miracles on our behalf.
Beware of the Deadly Sin of Grumbling
Complaining is a form of unbelief. God has already proved that He cares for us. He has demonstrated He has our best interests at heart. If He has delivered us from death, illnesses and other dangers in the past, why do we doubt He can deliver us from current troubles?
Because complaining is a form of unbelief, it is a serious sin before God.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, forgive me for complaining and fill my heart with faith, contentment and gratitude.
