I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted.
Job 42:2 (NIV)
After the flood, God commanded Noah “As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it.” (Genesis 9:7). This was the same command God had given to Adam and Eve after creating them (Genesis 1:28).
Noah’s descendants, though, said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” (Genesis 11:4).
God’s Purpose Cannot be Thwarted
In blatant defiance of God, they decided to build a permanent home in the plain of Shinar. They also agreed to build a very high tower so that they would not drown if another flood came. Remember, God had promised not to destroy the earth with a flood again.
They forgot what Job says about God, “I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted.” (Job 42:2). That is why God confused their language and, “scattered them over the face of the whole earth.” (Genesis 11:9).
Cooperating with God for Our Good
How often do we behave like the residents of Babel? We know God’s commandments yet we break them blatantly. God warns us against some projects, relationships and places, but we defy Him and expect to succeed.
On the other hand, if you are discouraged because Satan and his human agents have blocked your path, do not despair. What the LORD has purposed for you, He will accomplish, the obstacles notwithstanding.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You because Your purpose cannot be thwarted.
