The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground.
Mark 4:26-27 (NKJV)
hen a farmer plants seeds, he expects them to sprout within a certain period. He does not go to sleep wondering whether the seeds will germinate or not. From experience, he believes the seeds will sprout.
This is the essence of the Parable of the Growing Seed, as told by Jesus:
“The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground, and should sleep by night and rise by day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he himself does not know how. For the earth yields crops by itself: first the blade, then the head, after that the full grain in the head. But when the grain ripens, immediately he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.” (Mark 4:26-29).
Collaborating with God
This parable demonstrates that God is active in nature. Inside the seed there is a germinating principle implanted by God. However, unless the seed is in an environment conducive to germination, it will not sprout.
Like the man who scatters the seed in Jesus’ parable, we must work in our offices, businesses and vocations every day. God does not play this role. However, our labour will only bear fruit because of the blessings of the Lord.
Today, go out and work diligently wherever God has placed you. Trust God to give enliven your efforts. Realize that germination, maturity and harvesting in a process, not an event. Play your role and let God do His part.
Prayer
LORD, As I go about planting my seeds, may You bring the rain and sunshine for germination and growth and give me patience to wait for the harvest.
