I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD
In the land of the living.
Psalms 27:13 (NKJV)
The Twenty-Seventh Psalm reveals a troubled yet hopeful David. From the onset, the reader realizes that the psalmist is in an uncomfortable situation. He says, “The LORD is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life, of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalms 27:1).
Experiencing God’s Goodness
David’s enemies surround him, seeking to harm him. While he acknowledges the risks he is facing, David remains optimistic. For example, in verse 2, he says, “When the wicked came against me to eat up my flesh, my enemies and foes; they stumbled and fell.”
Verse 13 encapsulates the gist of the Psalm by declaring, “I would have lost heart, unless I had believed, that I would see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.” (Verse 13).
No Christian is immune to trouble and the stress, despondency and discouragement they bring. During such moments, faith in God is will life our spirits.
Hope Beyond Ephemeral Troubles
God will come through for us in this life. After ephemeral troubles, God will give us long periods of joy and fulfilment. We will enjoy His goodness because we have trusted in Him. Indeed, we will outlive our troubles.
If you are going through a rough patch, do not despair. God has a noble reason for allowing you to suffer for a while. Rest assured that He has plans to prosper you in this life and to live with you in eternity thereafter.
Prayer
Father, when I am afraid, remind me that I shall see You will still bless me in this life.
