How to Overcome Materialism

Daily Devotional – Thursday, August 4, 2022
Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Hebrews 13:5 (NKJV)

The earth is the LORD’s, and all its fullness. The world and those who dwell therein.” (Psalms 24:1). This is a fundamental fact and teaching in Christianity. It forms the basis for responsible stewardship.

Knowing that God owns the earth and everything in it (including us) should fill us with not only godly awe but also gratitude. There is, though, another attitudinal change that happens in us when we acknowledge God’s sovereignty over our lives.

Let Your Conduct be Without Covetousness

The writer to the Hebrews addresses this issue when he says, “Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”” (Hebrews 13:5).

The term ‘covetousness’ also means ‘love of money’. God warns us against putting our trust in money. Instead, we are to be content with the blessing we have now. While God does not discourage us from pursuing a better life, He wants us to be grateful and happy today.

I Will Never Leave You nor Forsake You

How is this possible in a world where people pursue money day and night at all costs? The secret is in the promise, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” God assures us that as long as we have Him on our side, we will not lack.

In essence, if we have the owner of the earth in our camp, we have everything we need. God owns the gold, silver and money in the world. Our need is not money but God. Contentment results from knowing that God has our best interests at heart.

Prayer
Almighty Father, inculcate in me the belief that when I have You, I have everything.
