The Consequences of Impatience

Daily Devotional – Monday, August 8, 2022
Stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which He will accomplish for you today.
Exodus 14:13 (NKJV)

King Saul is preparing for war. One important task, though, stands between him and the battlefield. The Prophet, Judge, and Priest—Samuel—must make a sacrifice to God. As the enemy army assembles, seven days pass and Samuel has not shown up.

Saul’s impatience reaches crescendo. Old man Samuel seems not to understand the urgency of the war. The king assigns himself the role of priest and offers the sacrifice. This is unheard of in Israel.

But Now Your Kingdom Shall Not Continue

When Samuel arrives, he is enraged with Saul. He tells the king, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of the LORD your God, which He commanded you. For now, the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. But now your kingdom shall not continue.” (1 Samuel 13:13-14).

Because of impatience, Saul lost the kingdom to David. Impatience is a lack of trust and faith in God’s timing. It is taking away the burdens we had given to the Lord and carrying them ourselves because He seems late.

Stand Still, and See the Salvation of the LORD

Like Saul, when we take shortcuts, we end up suffering. We do this, for example, in our choice of friends, marriage partners, careers, lifestyles, and other facets of life. Instead of committing our ways to the Lord, we lean on our own understanding and pay the painful price.

When the Egyptians trapped the fleeing Israelites, Moses told the latter, “Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which He will accomplish for you today…The LORD will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.” (Exodus 14:13-14).

Wait Patiently

When we trust God and hold our peace, He fights for us. Conversely, when we use our own means without His blessings, we not only fail; we also lose the blessings He has for us at the end of the waiting period.

In which areas of your life is God urging you to be patient today? Will you wait for Him or proceed without Him and pay the painful consequences of impatience?

Prayer
Almighty Father, today, I choose to be still and witness You transforming my life.
