…but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.
John 20:31 (NKJV)
The period between the baptism of Jesus and His death was three and a half years. A critical analysis of the Gospel of John reveals that the events covered occurred in a total of 29 days. In essence, John documented a small fraction of the life and times of Jesus.
John confesses, “And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.” (John 21:25).
Scriptures are Written that You May Have Faith
While many people wrote about Jesus (Luke 1:1-3), they could not narrate everything. John observes, “And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.” (John 20:30-31).
Paul selected a few of his experiences with Jesus. He shared his reflections to inspire his readers to have faith in Jesus. That is the purpose of all Bible books, not just John’s Gospel.
The Vital Nexus Between Scripture and Faith
Paul buttresses John’s assertions when he writes, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (Romans 10:17). Without faith in God, there is no salvation (Read John 3:16 & Ephesians 2:8).
How do you relate to the Word of God? What percentage of your reading time do you spend on the Bible vis-à-vis the time you expend on other written, visual and audio-visual materials? What adjustments do you need to make in you reading life to build your faith?
Prayer
Dear Jesus. Inculcate in me immense love for Your Word, that I my faith in You may increase.
