Friendship With the World is Enmity With God

Daily Devotional – Friday, August 26, 2022
Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
James 4:4 (NKJV)

Prophet Amos asks a rhetorical question, “Can two walk together unless they are agreed?” (Amos 3:3). In other words, friends must share values and beliefs. They also need a list of dos and don’ts to bind them.

In addition, the relationship suffers with the entry of a third party. The extra person is likely to introduce strange philosophies and values hence driving a wedge between friends. Marriages and relationships are especially vulnerable to this risk.

Bad Company Ruins Good Morals

As Christian, when we accept Jesus as personal Saviour and Lord, we enter into a friendship with Him, like Abraham did. For this relationship to thrive, we must adhere to rules set by God. For example, we must give God undivided devotion.

Paul also warns us against introducing third parties into our friendship with God, lest we lose focus. He says, “Do not be deceived: “Evil company corrupts good habits.”” (1 Corinthians 15:33). In essence, if we associate with ungodly people, our relationship with God will weaken.

Friendship With the World is Enmity With God

James is blunter. He compares ungodly relationships to adultery and asks, “Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” (James 4:4).

We cannot be friends with God and the world at the same time. Choosing one means rejecting the other. Friendship with God entails daily and constant communication through prayer, Bible study and piety.

What sacrifices will you make today to distance yourself from worldly pleasures and habits hence strengthening your friendship with God?

Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me to remain Your loyal friend.

Charles Ouma-

May God put in me hatred towards all that is in the word. Hatred towards the lusts of the flesh – all egotism, pride and evil – and to love what God loves – all that is good, pure, noble and lovely.
And to do His sweet will
we should not love the world, when we love the world the love of the father is not in us.
“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.1 john 2:15.
