For the earth yields crops by itself; first the blade, then the head, after that the full grain in the head.
Mark 4:28 (NKJV)
A popular mantra in contemporary society is, “Work smart, not hard.” We want to spend less time and effort on projects and tasks. For instance, from the comfort of our living rooms, we can pay bills and order freshly-cooked food using mobile phone apps
However, sometimes we overlook the inherent risks of a life of ease. For example, taking the staircase has more health benefits than using the elevator. Similarly, nature teaches us to value processes rather than events.
Process in the Germination Process
Concerning the growth of plants, Jesus taught:
“For the earth yields crops by itself: first the blade, then the head, after that the full grain in the head. But when the grain ripens, immediately he (man) puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.” (Mark 4:28-29).
Notice that growth is a process, not an event. The farmer plants the seed and believes in God to provide the requirements for the seed to grow. The seed then grows from blade, head and full grain before the farmer receives an abundant harvest.
Process in Human Life
any college students expect to graduate, get a job and grow rich almost immediately. The reality disappoints them. Newly-married people may think their lives will be full of bliss until they discover the frailties of their partners and experience the dynamics of matrimony.
As Christians, we often feel frustrated by our character flaws. We wonder why we are not perfect. However, as we continue relying on God for inner strength, we realize we are gradually being transformed into His image.
Trust the Process of Life
Life is a process. We must trust this process. We cannot climb a tree from the top. We must begin at the bottom. The ascent is not easy but even the littlest step takes us close to the goal. In life, the blade, the head and the full grain must precede the harvest. Trust the process.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me to be patient and to trust the process that leads to my destiny.
I love the finishing words of Isaiah in Is 30.18 where he says “……..For the LORD is a God of justice; Blessed are all those who wait for Him.”
That’s it, Hans. God makes us wait, for a reason.
