Let There be Light!

Daily Devotional – Friday, October 14, 2022
For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
2 Corinthians 4:6 (NKJV)

The first words God utters in the Bible are, “Let there be light.” (Genesis 1:3). God begins His creative work by expelling the darkness that prevails over the face of the deep. (Verse 2). This is necessary because, “God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.” (1 John 1:5).

I Am the Light of the World

Millennia later, the Creator comes to earth and announces, “I am the light of the world.” (John 9:5). He is here to dispel the darkness that entered the world when Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden.

Because He wants to involve His followers in the salvation of other human beings, Jesus offers to share His light with us. He tells us, “You are the light of the world.” (Matthew 5:14). The Lord adds, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16).

Light Shines Out of Darkness

This begs the question: How can human beings be the light of the world, a quality that belongs to God only? Apostle Paul, while referencing God’s command in Genesis 1:3, reveals the secret.

He says, “For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” (2 Corinthians 4:6).

Illuminating the World with the Word of God

Notice that we do not possess light. It is a gift from God. He shines upon us thus enabling us to illuminate others. In this regard, God is the sun and we are the moon. The moon has no light of its own. It reflects the sun’s light.

God issues the same command to us as He did on the first day of creation: “Let there be light!” In our fight with the powers of darkness, our work is to brighten the earth with the word of God hence leading others to salvation.

Let there be light!

When we allow God the Holy Spirit into our hearts, He transforms our characters into the likeness of Jesus. The product is a loving and lovable Christian, an embodiment of God’s command: “Let there be light!

Prayer
Divine Light, come and live in me that I may reflect Your light through my conduct, thus fulfilling your command to shine Your light in the world.
