I lay down and slept. I awoke, for the LORD sustained me.
Psalms 3:5 (NKJV)
I dread insomnia. Losing sleep attracts incessant thoughts that aggravate as the night wears on. The mind wanders from topic to topic, leaving many issues incomplete. If I am lucky to fall asleep before daybreak, the very few hours dissipate like mist before the sun.
The Circadian Cycle
The last time I failed to sleep at night was dues to an illness. The pain kept me awake. I left the bed and lay on the sofa. Still, sleep evaded me. I tried reading a book to entice sleep but it fled further away.
Have you ever asked yourself where sleep comes from? You have probably heard of the circadian cycle, which regulates your sleep pattern. When we interfere with this clock, our bodies suffer from sleep deprivation and concomitant frustration and irritability.
God Gives His Beloved Sleep
However, because insomnia defies the circadian clock, there must be another source of sleep. David identifies the spring of sleep as follows: “For so He (God) gives His beloved sleep.” (Psalms 127:2).
We often take sleep for granted, believing it is our right. Sleeping at night and waking up in the morning appears to be just another normal activity. The psalmist considers sleep a gift from God to those He loves.
Enjoying the Gift of Sleep
The third psalm recounts David’s experience when he fled from his son Absalom. The king recounts how God protected him from his (David’s) wayward son. Despite the danger David was exposed to, he affirmed, “I lay down and slept. I awoke, for the LORD sustained me.” (Psalms 3:5).
Like David, we can enjoy God’s gift of sleep, not because we deserve it, but because God sustains us. Whatever challenges you are experiencing today, trust your life to God, and you will lay down, sleep and awake because God sustains us.
Prayer
Thank You, God, because I will lay down and sleep, and wake up, thanks to Your sustenance.
Amen..the fundamental necessity of sleep is an evidenced by God through Creation establishing periods of rest-night and directing our bodies to obey the rhythm. A physiological necessity in order to maintain the highest physical and mental efficiency.
And God himself has promised to give us quality sleep.
Proverbs 3:24. You will not be afraid when you go to bed, and you will sleep soundly throughout the night.
Amen, Doc.
Sleep rejuvenates the body and help it clear Itself from toxins improving it’s optimal function, Christ Invite us to come all who are weary and are heavy laden and He’ll give us rest. When we rest and sleep we get a new and fresh burst of energy to sustain our body. In Doing this we obey God’s principles of health that He has given us.
Amen
