Why should You be like a man astonished, like a mighty one who cannot save? Yet You, O LORD, are in our midst, and we are called by Your name. Do not leave us!
Jeremiah 14:9 (NKJV)
Sin separates us from God. It results in physical, social, and spiritual harm to the offender. Once we realize how far we have gone from God, the solution is to repent, forsake sin, and return to God.
Iniquities Testify Against Us
This is the scenario in Jeremiah, Chapter 14. The prophet voices the penitent people’s cry when he writes,
“O LORD, though our iniquities testify against us, do it for Your name’s sake, for our backslidings are many. We have sinned against You. O the Hope of Israel, his Savior in time of trouble. Why should You be like a stranger in the land, and like a traveler who turns aside to tarry for a night?” (Verses 7-8).
We are Called by Your Name
Notice that the people acknowledge their iniquity and backsliding. They do not offer excuses for their sins. There is, however, a twist in this petition. They remind God that He is their Hope and Saviour. They challenge God not to act like a stranger among His own people.
They further appeal to God, “Why should You be like a man astonished, like a mighty one who cannot save? Yet You, O LORD, are in our midst, and we are called by Your name. Do not leave us!” (Jeremiah 14:9).
Possessing the Character of God
This is a repentant child telling the angry Father, “I acknowledge I have brought shame to Your Name, but You are still my Dad. I bear Your Name. If You desert me, who will pick me up? Do not forsake me! I beg You.”
This is a desperate call for forgiveness and restoration. That said, the implication of being called by God’s Name is immense. It means professed believers should possess the character of God and represent Him wherever they go.
Do Not Leave Us!
If we are to plead with God not to leave us, we must be ready to live according to His dictates. It is a privilege to be called a child of God. The title ‘Christian’ is an honor we cannot take lightly. God will not live with us if we take His name in vain.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, because I am called by Your Name. Do not leave me.
